Benin – Leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State on Monday appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to allow a level playing field for all parties participating in the September 10, 2016 governorship election in the state.

The leaders, including former chairman of the board of trustees of the party, Chief Tony Anenih and Chief Gabriel Igbinedion, the Esama of Benin, who spoke through Chief Tom Ikimi at the flagging off of the party’s governorship campaign in Benin, said the appeal has become necessary so that Edo people can determine their collective destiny themselves, using the ballot on that date.

Chief Tom Ikimi said the president must use the Edo election to reciprocate former President Goodluck Jonathan’s good gesture in allowing a level playing field for a similar election in the past, which was won by then ACN candidate now Governor Adams Oshiomhole.

Addressing a mammoth crowd of supporters who thronged the Baptist Convention Hall, Benin City, venue of the flag-off of the campaigns for the elections, Ikimi said, “Mr. President this is payback time. I want you to pay me back. I ask you for a level playing field in Edo” come September 10.

The event featured the presentation of the party’s flag and a key to the Edo PDP governorship candidate, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, by a member of the National Caretaker Committee, Senator Odion Ugbesia.

Ugbesia said the occasion signifies the issuance of a quit notice to the ruling All Progressives Congress in Edo State Government House, adding that the party must vacate by November 12, 2016 as the PDP will form the next government in the state.

Speaking on behalf of the party’s board of trustees, Professor Jerry Gana said the choice of Pastor Ize-Iyamu to fly the party’s flag in the September 10 polls in Edo was in good faith, as the “candidate is godly, just, and fair and displays the capacity to work”.

Also speaking, the governor of Akwa-Ibom State, Udom Emmanuel, said it was a mistake for the APC to have been ruling Edo State for the past seven and half years, pointing out that Edo is originally a PDP state and called on Edo voters to return the state to its original owner.

Governor Emmanuel gave kudos to the party’s delegates for nominating Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, who he described as a typical Edo son as the party’s governorship candidate, saying that “a typical Edo man is like a lion which can never eat leave no matter how hungry the carnivorous animal may be”.

He said with Ize-Iyamu as the candidate of the party, the governorship election has already been won by the PDP.

Senator Matthew Urhoghide representing Edo South Senatorial District described Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu as divine intervention to rescue Edo people from the suffocation of the APC government led by Adams Oshiomhole, adding that the nightmare of Edo people will end on November 12 when Oshiomhole will hand over to Ize-Iyamu.

Earlier, the state chairman of the party, Chief Dan Orbih, lamented the attitude of the state government in reneging on an earlier approval for the event to be held at the Ogbe Stadium in the state capital and wondered why the volteface.

He said that the choice of Ize-Iyamu to return the party to power in Benin City was because the PDP membership is fully “conscious of the cries of our people; the plight of teachers and the army of unemployed youths”.

Describing the candidate as the political redeemer of Edo, Orbih said that Edo youths, women, teachers, pensioners and the unemployed should be rest assured that come November 2016 with a PDP governor in office, the change that will change Edo fortunes will be enthroned.

“The problem of Edo State cannot be solved with Panadol, it cannot be solved by Codeine or even common APC…The solution is the only legitimate candidate of the PDP, Pastor Ize-Iyamu”, he noted.

When the candidate Pastor Ize-Iyamu spoke after accepting the mandate of the PDP, he sang several praise songs and commended party leaders and members for giving him the opportunity to run for governor.

He said the party will win the September 10, 2016 election because the present APC government led by Governor Oshiomhole has deceived the people for long and needs to be shown the way out of the Government House in Benin City.

According to Ize-Iyamu, “If elected, I will bring about a change that will not deepen the poverty in our state or perpetuate unemployment in our land but one that will create jobs and support intervention in agriculture, industries, the economy and regard for the traditional institutions and persons with disabilities”.

Ize-Iyamu also introduced a former council chairman of Esan North East, Mr. John Yakubu, as his running mate and his wife, Idia, a dentist and associate professor at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital in Benin City.

“We will develop all parts of Edo State; we will not restrict ourselves to schools but will intervene in sports, the environment and restore the lost glory of Edo State and give scholarships and bursary to indigent students in tertiary institutions of learning”.

Present at the occasion were state governors of Delta and Akwa-Ibom, former Senators Victor Oyofo, Yisa Braimah, serving Senators Clifford Odia for Edo Central and Matthew Urhoghide of Edo South, among several party chieftains.
