Abuja – The Nigeria Prison Service (NPS) has dismissed rumour that high profile detainee Charles Okah, younger brother of Henry Okah, presently facing trial over alleged role in the 2010 Independence Day bombing, has escaped from prison custody,  among others unaccounted for in a jailbreak at medium prison facility in Kuje, Abuja.

The Prison service nevertheless confirmed a breach in the security at the facility and that the newly inaugurated Comptroller General Ahmed Ja’afaru has set up a high-powered investigation team to unravel cause of the jailbreak and ascertain identity of inmates, if any, that may have escaped.

It was also learned that the NPS has initiated a manhunt of possible escapees in Kuje Area, irrespective of the findings of the committee.

The jailbreak, reportedly occurred on Friday night. Okah according to the several sources scaled the high prison walls.

But Francis Enobore, Public Relations Officer of NPS said Okah was still in custody and that his principal, Ja’afaru had personally visited him to ascertain the veracity of his rumoured escape.

“The rumour is not true. I can confirm to you that Okah is still in our custody. The new Comptroller General has gone to see things for himself and he attests that Okah is in custody” he said in phone.

Earlier in a statement, Francis Enobore, had dismissed the rumour about Okah’s escape, insisting that he is still in safe custody.

“Yes there was an incident on Friday at our Kuje Medium Prison, but Okah was not involved. It is not true that Okah has escaped from our custody, Charles Okah is still in custody. I have been in touch with our men in the prison facility and I can confirm to you that there is nothing like Okah escaping,” Enobore insisted.

Enobore revealed that the newly decorated Comptroller General of Prison has immediately ordered a thorough investigations into the incident and ascertain identity of affected inmates.

He said: “The Comptroller of prisons has ordered a thorough investigation into the incident and I can confirm to you that they have swung into action to unravel what actually transpired.”

“We want to know if any inmate actually escaped and if yes, what are their identities. I can assure Nigerians that we are not going to sweep anything under the carpet. The Service will release a statement once the preliminary investigations are concluded,” he assured.

It is  not certain whether Okah is the only high profile detainee kept in the facility. Informed sources hinted that the medium facility houses a good number of Boko Haram kingpins who are yet to be charged.
