…Ignore His Ranting, Makarfi Committee Tells Members

Rotimi Akinwumi

Abuja – The troubled opposition party, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), went a step deeper in its crisis on Sunday (yesterday) when former National Chairman of the party, Ali Modu-Sheriff announced the suspension of the Edo States executive committee of the party and the setting up of a caretaker committee.

Modu-Sheriff in a press statement he jointly signed with the former National Secretary of the party, Prof Wale Oladipo, said the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party under their control took the decision in line with the provisions of section 31 (2) (e) of the PDP constitution.

However, in an immediate response, the National Caretaker Committee under the leadership of Senator Ahmed Makarfi said the former Chairman lacks the locus to make the pronouncements because he’s not the chairman of the party..

The committee also urged the security agencies to monitor the activities of the former chairman more closely as he has penchant for creating problems.

In the statement issued by Modu-Sheriff, he stated that the decision to suspend the Edo State Executive was taken at its NWC meeting held on June 21 which considered various petitions it received against officers of the state chapter of the party.

“The suspension, which is part of the decision taken at the NWC meeting of June 21, 2016 is sequel to various petitions deriving from allegations of irregularities arising from the last State Congresses that sought to elect State Executive Committee for the chapter.

“The National Working Committee (NWC) decided to suspend the Committee instead of outright dissolution to enable it investigate the allegations and come out with a fair and just decision.

“Consequently, the National Working Committee has approved the appointment of the following persons as Caretaker Committee to manage the affairs of Edo State PDP for the constitutional stipulated period of three months.

“The Committee has Chief Ebenezer Alabi as Chairman and Barr. Zealiwe Edmund as Secretary. Other members are Ehimekpen Okharedia, Mrs. Melody Ekunne Osagie, Blessing Agbabaku, Negerese Berry, Hon Daniel Ohiole Asekhame and Mr.Dan Omozokpai” the statement said.

However, the caretaker committee in a statement singed by Prince Dayo Adeyeye called the bluff of Modu-Sheriff, describing him as a hatchet man doing the bidding of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

“The general public, in particular leadership and members of the PDP in Edo State are advised to ignore the statement as it is completely with neither basis nor authority. Procedures for taking such far-reaching decisions are prescribed in the constitution of the party, so is the organs so empowered to take it.

“It is no longer news that the Ali Modu-Sheriff led National Working Committee and indeed all national officers were removed by the Party’s Convention, which is the highest decision making organ of the Party. Senator Sheriff and his cohorts therefore lack the locus to take any decision on behalf of the Party.

“This purported suspension is clearly part of the desperation of Senator Sheriff and his paymasters to orchestrate confusion that would lead to the failure of the Party in the forthcoming gubernatorial election in Edo State; an election that the Party is otherwise very well placed to win.

“The Care-Taker Committee recognizes, and would continue to relate with the leadership of the Party in Edo State that was validly elected at the recent Congresses, even as it calls on the members and teeming supporters of the Party in the state to remain steadfast and vigilant in the face of the mischief being perpetrated by Sheriff in order to destroy the Party.

“The Caretaker Committee also appeals to the Nigeria Police, the Department of State Services and indeed all security agencies to call Sheriff to order as well as keep more than an eye on him, so that he doesn’t precipitate crisis in any part of the country, for which he is well known, since we, as Nigerians already have enough on our hands to contend with” the statement signed by Adeyeye stated further.
