36 Clubs For FIBA 3X3 Basketball

Not less than 36 teams from eight countries will feature in the maiden Federation of International Basketball Association (FIBA) Africa Zone 3, competition tagged `3X3 Basketball Tournament’ to be hosted by Nigeria in Lagos.

The competition is scheduled to hold at the National Stadium, Lagos from June 18 to June 21.

Addressing a news conference on Tuesday in Lagos Sam Ahmedu, President, FIBA Zone 3 said the event was being organised to develop basketball in the zone.

He said that N2 million (10,000 dollars) would be expended in running the competition. It would also coverthe prize-money for the top three winners in the competition.

According to him, the zone comprises hosts, Nigeria, Cote d’ Ivoire, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Togo, Niger, Benin Republic and Liberia.

“Besides other FIBA-organised qualifying tournaments in the zone, this is the first of its kind, organised by the zone three, executive board after our inauguration in Ouagadougou, in October 2014.

“The event will also feature other side actions like the three point’s shootout, slam dunk computations and musical attractions.

“We have the support of the NBA Africa. We shall also have in attendance some U.S-based Nigerian players and others from across the globe.

“I want to assure you of the zone’s board commitment to take the game to greater heights in our area of influence.

“We are resolved to strengthen the national federations within our jurisdiction to be proactive and self-sufficient,’’ Ahmed said.

NAN reports that accreditation for the competition would commence immediately on arrival of the teams.

The zonal president also said a workshop for participants and officials will hold on June 19 before the jump ball on June 20.
