Asaba – The expectation by residents of Ogwashi-Uku, headquarters of Aniocha South Local Government Area of Delta State, that electricity would be restored in the community after over 10 years of blackout remains a forlorn hope.

Sir Emmanuel Okafor, President-General of Ogwashi-Uku Development Union (ODU), told Independent on Tuesday, two weeks after the expiration of the deadline to the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC), that the company is unconcerned about the suffering of the people.

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) had directed BEDC to restore electricity in Ogwashi-Uku community by the first week of June.

The community had dragged BEDC before the electricity regulator for stringent pre-conditions such as bearing the full cost of replacing electricity installations and payment of community bill, which were overturned by the commission at a ruling in Benin City.

Sir Okafor said, “No staff of the company has been sighted in the town, only labourers who claimed they were hired by the company to clear bushes around some electricity installations in the community.

“We promised further action if by June 11, 2016, electricity is not restored in the community, so we are meeting and consulting with various stakeholders to see how the company can be compelled to be alive to its responsibility,” he said.
