Says APC’s Time Is UP In Edo

Francis Onoiribholo

Benin – Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu on Monday won the Edo State Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) governorship primaries to fly the party’s flag in the September 10 governorship election.

He will now contend will Mr. Godwin Obaseki of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who won his party’s ticket on Saturday.

Ize-Iyamu got 584 votes out of the 713 votes cast by the delegates. His closest rival Hon. Matthew Iduoriyekemwen, scored 91 votes to come second while Solomon Edebiri got 38 votes.

Governor Dave Umahi of Ebonyi State, the chairman of the Electoral Committee, declared the result at the Lawn Tennis Court of the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City, venue of the primaries.

In his acceptance speech, Mr. Ize-Iyamu commended the national leadership of the party and the electoral committee for transparency and fairness in the process.

He said the fight to reclaim Edo State would continue until the party produced the governor in the September 10 election.

Ize-Iyamu said that with his victory, the APC’s time in Government House, Benin City, is up, noting that it is wishful thinking for it to think of continuity in the sense that its candidate will win in September election.

“Governor Adams Oshiomhole’s  8 years is up, there can be no continuity, we have tried you and you have failed, so on behalf of our elders, I want to thank them and I want to assure them that we will not fail. And members of the National Assembly, two senators out of three that tells a story, and members of the House of Reps, five out of nine, it tells a story”, he noted.

Continuing, he said, “Your Excellency, the governor of Ebonyi, I don’t know how we can thank you for what you just did, we know the hours you spent with us yesterday ensuring that everything we needed to bring free and fair primaries was done. You made us to sign the ballot papers and you took us through the procedures, you gave us the guidelines, you gave us the list of those who were accredited and we have thought that this morning you will come sit down as a governor and watch proceedings but today you did what Prof. Jega could not do, you practically supervised the process from accreditation to voting, sorting out and counting the results, we thank you very much.

“As we are thanking you, we want to also thank members of the electoral panel, they have done so much to ensure that this exercise was done in the kind of transparent manner that we saw, we might not be able to tell you thank you now but let me give you an assurance that by the time you visit this year from December, a PDP governor will welcome you. That is the only way we can appreciate you for the great job that you have done. Let me also thank our governors, at the time when people thought PDP was finished we are showing strength. I watched when the APC did their primaries, apart from the governor of Katsina who came and the governor of Edo who behaved as if he was contesting I didn’t see any other governor, but in our own case two well educated governors are here, two solid governors are here. Let us put our hands together for the governors of Delta and Gombe State, we are grateful sirs. The Ebonyi governor has been acknowledged; he came here to do an official duty”.

“And please you must appeal to them because very soon they will be admitting a brand new governor and they must teach me the ropes, I look forward to learning from you sir”, he noted.
