Lagos – Ozo Paul Chibuzor, the General Manager of Enugu Rangers FC, has charged the League Management Company (LMC) to improve on the quality of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) for the country to have better continental representations.
The Manager, who lamented the defeat of Enyimba of Aba by Zamalek of Egypt in their first game of the CAF Champions League group stage, said on Monday that improving the quality of the NPFL would impact positively on the clubs.
According to him, “The LMC has to step up its running of the Nigerian top league; Nigerian performance at the continental level is not good enough and that is a wake up call that something needs to be done.
“Enyimba which is the only team that Nigeria has at the continental club competition on Sunday were beaten in Port Harcourt by Zamalek. That also tells you that something is wrong.”
On the way forward, Chibuzor admonished that the LMC should throw the league open to all clubs for only the best to win in any game irrespective of the venue.
The Rangers boss, who frowned at the outcome of Wikki/Pillars game in Bauchi, said that the LMC has taken the league to a commendable standard and it must not be allowed to drop.
“What happened in Bauchi on Sunday (Week 23) between Wikki and Pillars is not a good story. Must Wikki win all their matches at home; the game recorded three red cards against Pillars, how do you reconcile that? He queried.
Chibuzor said that Nigeria could only get quality continental representation when only good clubs are allowed to pick the tickets noting that Warri Wolves and Akwa United early exit in their continental campaigns were enough lessons to learn from.
“Warri Wolves and Akwa United that were part of Nigeria’s representatives at the CAF Champions League and CAF Cup, how far did they go when the continental campaign started? We know how some teams won their tickets,” he concluded.
