Asaba – Residents of Asaba, Delta State, who took their daily consumption of bread for granted are on Wednesday grappled with the reality of doing without the daily staple.

The usual round of distributing bread to shops across Asaba and neighbouring towns such as Okpanam, which was a morning routine for the bakeries, was missing on Wednesday.

It was gathered that the bakeries could no longer keep up with the production of bread following the hike in the price of flour and other items such as sugar, yeast and preservatives.

Prices of bread had gone up in the state capital in recent times, which the bakers had attributed to the geometric rise in the price of various items used in baking bread.

Mr. Paul Umoh, a shop owner, said he was hinted on the present situation when he went to buy bread on Tuesday.

“They told me to buy more bread, that they will soon be going on strike but bread is not what you can buy and store in your shop,” he said.

Mrs. Henrietta Nkwor, another trader, said she had been endlessly waiting for her daily delivery of bread, adding that she learnt of the situation when she called the delivery van.

“They told me a bag of flour is now over N300 as against the old price of about N120,” she said.

She said customers are now buying more biscuits, sausage roll and other snacks due to the few shops still selling bread.
