Lagos – League leaders, Wikki Tourists of Bauchi, will test their resolve to win the league against a difficult opposition on Sunday. The Bauchi side will travel to Owerri to be the guest of former champions, Heartland, in one of the week 22 matches across the country.
Wikki have won their last four matches, which has placed the points clear of second and third placed Rangers International and Rivers United respectively.
In the week 21 encounter, Tourists defeated El-Kanemi Warriors 1-0 in Bauchi. That was after they defeated Ikorodu United with a similar score line in the week 20 encounter in Lagos. Enyimba were their earlier victims in a rescheduled encounter in Bauchi winning 3-0 in one of the week 19 matches, which ended the first stanza of the current league season.
Heartland are one step above the drop and will fancy getting all the three points on offer on Sunday. The Naze Millionaires were almost getting all the three points against Warri Wolves in Warri on Wednesday when they led 2-0 in the first half before the league runners up last season pull the goals back to share the spoil.
The Imo State owned team will obviously not allow Wikki to overrun them and will throw everything in the match to get the most-sought-after win.
Solomon Onu, Heartland Media Officer, while speaking to Independent, said Wikki will go back to Bauchi with nothing, while ruing his team’s draw against Wolves on Wednesday.
“We are prepared for the match. Wikki may be topping the table but we are not perturbed by the present condition of our own team. Wikki match will be just one of those matches Heartland will approach normally and I am promising you that we will win because it is still painful that we drew the match against Warri Wolves even when we were almost there.”
Wikki will obviously be banking on current league top scorer, Godwin Obaje, who has scored 14 goals this season, to snatch an unlikely win at Dan Anyiam Stadium in Owerri.
Abba Shehu, the spokesman of Wikki, however, is upbeat that his side would continue their good run in the league. Shehu spoke to Independent.
“We are going to Owerri to continue our good run. This is not to disrespect Heartland in any way because they are a good side. The only thing is that our current stand on the table has motivated us to approach every match with the right mentality,” he said.
