ASABA – Despite being a staple crop, tomato is no longer within the reach of the ordinary man in Asaba as the few quantities available in markets across the state capital are sold at cut throat prices to consumers. It was gathered that many residents of Asaba have resorted to the use of tin tomatoes while augmenting with the quantity of fresh tomatoes they can afford to buy given the high prices.

A tomato seller, Mrs. Julie Okoro attributed the situation to the difficulty in procuring the fresh tomatoes. “I think it is due to the poor supply of the produce from the Northern part of the country but I have never experienced such scarcity at this period of the year in over 25 years of being in this business.”

She said that “it is killing our business because only few people are asking for tomatoes in the market.”

This is because many consumers are shy of the produce in the market given the prevailing prices. Investigation revealed that three to four small balls of tomatoes are sold for as much as N100. A customer who made fun of the situation, said that “apple has now swapped places with tomatoes. Now it is far cheaper to buy apple which we thought was only for the rich than to buy common tomatoes.”
