Lagos – Nigeria will not play Egypt when the draws for the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying are conducted in Cairo, Egypt, on June 24.
This is because the two countries are in Pot 2 of the draws.
According to the seeding released on Thursday by FIFA, other countries in Pot 2 are Cape Verde, DR Congo and Mali.
Algeria, Cote d’ Ivoire, Ghana and Senegal are the top four African teams in the latest FIFA rankings, so it was no surprise to see them in Pot 1, but Tunisia are sixth, behind Egypt, who find themselves in Pot 2.
Alongside The Pharaohs in Pot 2 are the Cape Verde, Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria and Mali while there are some powerful teams in Pot 3 as Cameroon, Morocco, Guinea, South Africa and Congo are all paired together.
Pot 4, according to FIFA, is made up of Uganda, Burkina Faso, Zambia, Gabon and Libya.
The 20 teams will be drawn into five groups‚ each containing four sides‚ and the qualifiers will run from October 3, 2016 until November 14, 2017 with the group winners qualifying for the 2018 World Cup.
Egypt eliminated Nigeria from next year’s Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon after playing 1-1 in Kaduna and beat Nigeria 1-0 in Alexandria in March.
While the Super Eagles avoided the Pharaohs, there is the possibility that Super Eagles have the task of overcoming either Desert Foxes of Algeria, Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire, Black Stars of Ghana, Lions of Senegal or Carthage Eagles of Tunisia for a World Cup berth. There are also Indomitable Lions of Cameroon and Morocco’s national sides lurking behind for Eagles.
The group draw will be held on June 24, while the first round of matches will commence in October and end November 2017.
