Abuja – Amid raging controversy over the 2016 annual budget, Senator Udoma Udo Udoma, Minister of Budget and National Planning, has said action has commenced toward early preparation of the 2017 budget.

Udoma was addressing the Management Staff of his ministry.

The national assembly passed Nigeria’s 2016 budget few weeks ago after initial hiccups of alleged padding by the executive but the President Muhammadu Buhari has withheld his assent.
The supplementary budget initiated by the current administration has expired almost a month ago. Due to the budget impasse investors are reported to have withdrawn investible funds citing lack of policy direction from government.

Udoma, who sounded bullish, told the staff that early budget making would enhance economic development.

Meanwhile, in a statement issued and made available to journalists in Abuja, by Charles Dafe, Director of Information in the ministry, preparation of the Medium Term 2016-2020 Development Programme to achieve sustainable development has also begun.

The assertion was sequel to a courtesy visit by the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN) to the Minister of State, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed.

Mrs Ahmed sought for support from ANAN to help build staff capacity on Zero-Based Budgeting (ZBB) application.

“As accountants, we can resist corruption,” she said adding, or “block illegal releases; we need to start from ourselves; we must uphold the tenets of our profession and make ourselves clean and accountable always.”

The minister further added, “Our administration came on a change mantra; we shall be transparent and accountable to all Nigerians,” she said.

Speaking on the purpose of the visit, Anthony Nzom, ANAN’s president, assured the minister of providing technical know-how to the staff of the ministry on ZBB concept adopted in the 2016 budget.
