Two police corporals  attached to the chairman of Southern Ijaw Local Government Council of Bayelsa State, Remember Ogbe, were on Thursday  killed by gunmen suspected to be kidnappers.

It was gathered that the bandits, numbering four, had stormed the residence of Ogbe at 8pm to abduct him from his residence at Amassoma but the two policemen foiled the attempt as they resisted them.

Police Public Relations Officer, Bayelsa Police Command, Asinim Butswat, who confirmed the death of the two police corporals, said they died from the injuries they sustained in the gun duel.
He said the bodies of the deceased officers had been deposited at the Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa, “for autopsy”.

Butswat added that men of the police anti-kidnapping unit have arrested a suspect, Seigha Oduwaiye, 24, believed to be the mastermind of the foiled abduction attempt on the council chairman.

“The suspect has made useful statements. The men of the anti-kidnapping unit have intensified efforts to arrest his fleeing cohorts”, he said.

The attempt to kidnap Ogbe came barely six days after some gunmen abducted elder Christian Otobotekere, acting regent king of Ekpetiama Kingdom in Yenagoa Local Government Area and father of Governor Seriake Dickson’s former Chief of Staff, Didi Walson-Jack.
The dastardly activities of armed gangs, who kidnap and rob communities and neighbourhoods in Yenagoa and its environs, had been on the increase in the state.
On June 24,2015, an eight-man gang killed two policemen and abducted two Lebanese at Onuebum in Ogbia Local Government Area.
Six days after, precisely on June 30, another group of hoodlums numbering five abducted Martha Bina, the wife of former acting governor of Bayelsa, Nestor Binabo.
