Yenagoa – No fewer than 114 residents of Yenagoa were at the weekend arrested by the Bayelsa State Sanitation Authority for allegedly evading the state’s monthly sanitation exercise.

Robert Enogha, chairman of the sanitation agency, disclosed this to reporters in his office in Yenagoa, the state capital.

He said out of the 114 defaulters, 46 were males while 68 were females.

According to Enogha, about 48 defaulters have also been charged to court because of the serious nature of their offence.

He said  those who were detained in the premises of the agency would be made to pay an undisclosed sum of money or be given the option of cleaning the environment before they would be freed to serve as deterrent to others.

Enogha claimed that some of his agents were attacked and injured by unidentified persons who resisted arrests during the environmental exercise.

The sanitation boss stated that such scenario would not happen again as he would engage the services of law enforcement agents subsequently.

“At the Camp Murphy area of Tombia Round About, some of my boys were bruised, and now two of the boys are critically laying  in the hospital.

“Those are some of the hazards we are passing through. We will employ the services of the law enforcement agents to be going round with us. We don’t know why people will be attacking us when we are only educating them on how to keep their environment clean”, he said.

However, despite Enogha’s claim, some concerned residents have complained that some members of the sanitation task force take advantage of the environmental clean-up exercise to carry out extortion.
