Benin – The women wing of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Thursday in Benin compelled the party’s governorship aspirants in the September 10 Guber election to sign an MoU with them that whoever is elected among them will allocate more political positions to the women.

Dr. Aisosa Amadasun, APC Woman leader, made the position of the women known in an interactive session with the aspirants, which took place at the Imaguero Secondary School in Benin City.

Amadasun who was blunt in her statement, said that women would throw their weight behind any candidate who would convince the women that he or she would allocate more political positions to the women.

She said that the interactive session has become necessary as it has afforded the women opportunity to present their position which is sacrosanct with the Bejing declaration of affirmative action which stipulated that 30 percent slots of political position be reserved for women.

Amadasun pointed out that it was a well known fact that women constitute the highest numbers of voters during elections as they also form the backbone and strength during campaigns but lamented that, they were always relegated to the back ground soon after election.

According to her, the ugly trend, which has become a norm and adversely affecting the women in governance, must be reflected on with the aim of charting a new course for the women in politics.

“We are not out to confront the men but to agitate for a fair treatment, enter into a social contract with the aspirants that whoever emerges as the governorship candidate should take more appropriate step to be gender sensitive in the selection of a running mate, appointment into offices, including the position of secretary to government, chief of staff, civil commissioners, special advisers and special assistance.

The APC governorship aspirants present at the forum, including Comrade Peter Esele, Engr. Chris Ogiemwonyi, Godwin Obaseki, Pedro Obaseki, Gen. Airhiavbere, Mrs Agbara and Kenneth Imansuangbon who was represented by Isaiah Osifo however assured the women that their manifestoes have taken care of the women‘s demand.
